We recently took part in the cultural exhange program between the Korean Military Academy and the U.S. Military in which American military families, stationed at Yongsan, may volunteer to host senior cadets in their homes for dinner. It was such a great experience! We really enjoyed spending the limited time with our two cadets, Kim and Hwang (thankfully their English was better than our Korean). They were very polite and respectful but also funny and playful with the kids. What great young men!I must admit that the thing that impressed most me was how much food they consumed. We made an All-American meal of grilled ribeye steaks, huge baked potatos, salad and rolls. They both ate two generously-sized ribeyes each, the potato and had seconds on their salads. For dessert, we served chocolate chip cookies with icecream sundaes. To my shock, they both also had a second bowl of icecream and about 3 or 4 cookies each. Oh my gosh! Do you think they enjoyed it?
It was a great time and we learned alot about their lives as soon-to-be young Korean military officers. Surprisingly, they were not much different than any random 24 year old American in the same position.
We will definitely host again next year. In fact, K said that she wished we could do that every night.
